Tilman Fertitta acquires luxury southern California hotel

Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta has acquired the Montage Laguna Beach Resort Hotel in southern California, adding to his roster of more than a dozen hotels nationwide.

Details of the purchase weren’t disclosed.

The Montage Laguna Beach is a 30-acre seaside property in Laguna Beach that includes 260 rooms, a 20,000-square-foot spa and several other luxury amenities such as two pools and direct beach access. It’s about an hour’s drive south of Los Angeles International Airport.

“I have been traveling to Laguna Beach for over 30 years,” Fertitta said Monday in a statement announcing the deal. “It is one of my favorite places to visit and one of the most beautiful areas in the world. The Montage is a stunning oceanfront property and one of the premier hotel brands in the world.”

Fertitta, 65, is owner of the Post Oak Hotel in Houston — Texas’ only Forbes Double Five-Star Hotel and Spa — along with 14 hotel properties across the U.S. Along with his restaurant holdings under the Landry’s banner, Fertitta bought the Golden Nugget casino chain in 2005 and the NBA’s Houston Rockets in 2017.

Last month, Fertitta’s plans to build a 43-story luxury casino on the Las Vegas strip won approval from Clark County, Nev., officials.
